Why oppose gay marriage based on the Bible?

Hear me out!

This is NOT an attack on the character of anyone who does not agree with gay marriage, I just have a question about the bible and its definitions.

I do not doubt that the bible defines marriage as between a man and a woman. HOWEVER, we know that this definition was not necessarily agreed upon by those at the time. We see that the men of the Old Testament had multiple wives and slept with other women when they needed to; for reproductive purposes (Abraham), when they had more than one wife (David, soloman), etc. If they needed a wife, they even took virgins from neighboring towns they conquered. Jesus and Paul never provided models for proper relationships. So clearly, the definition is not black and white. There's a little wiggle room (even if it's only for men).

Second, I looked up the verses on what the definitions of marriage are, to see if a marriage "ceremony" is ever mentioned in the Bible. I can't find one anywhere. Everything we associate with "traditional" marriage is absent from the bible. It is only defined as leaving ones parents and uniting as one. That's it. Everything else we associate with marriage is just tradition that we added over the years.

Correct me on any point, but based on what I see, marriage is fluid. It was more open at the time the bible was written and surely we can allow it to be more open today.

So to those who are opposed, what do you think? Am I wrong?

Update:

People you don't need to accuse me of having never read the Bible or not read it all the way through. I don't remember everything. And I'm willing to be corrected. Don't be rude. I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just curious about your opinions.

You're not wrong. One man and one woman is CLEARLY wrong. One man can marry one woman many times over - giving him a harem, butbthat would be One man and as many women as he can afford.

Besides, homosexuality wasn't a problem for Jesus. Do you remember the story about the centurion? If you read it in Koine Greek, the word written as servant means something we don't have a word for. It would be approximated by servant/student - or an adolescent who sells his labors in exchange for lessons in the sexual arts. It can include adolescent females who enter training to be a temple prostitute. So if Jesus was OK with healing the homosexual or bisexual student/servant of the centurion, there should be no problem with baking cakes.

And the verse that said that God made humans male AND female. It didn't say male OR female.

Christians appear to also deny the legitimacy of medically proven hermaphrodites - being born with both genitalia. Why would God do that to someone if he didn't make them male AND female. It certainly explains how one can be a woman in a man's body as well.

King David loved his male lover Samuel more than any of his wives, and God was OK with that too. King David was one of his favorites according to the Bible.

The verse in Leviticus is a law of hygiene. Think of the days when there was no running water. Excrement can cause diseases that can spread throughut the whole community. (Think AIDS). So today we have condoms and the prohibition should be modified to read not lying with a man as with a woman unless wearing a condom.

The word homosexuality never appeared in any Bible until 1964. The word that origianlly appeared there would be more accurately translated in today's idiom as "couch potato" meaning lazy person.

the word Sodomite that does appear in the NT was used for many years before Christianity. It never had anything to do with sex. It was an epithet for someone you find disgusting. Today's language doesn't have even an approximate equivalent since the word *** ger was misused to apply to black people. Even then, it's not the same because a *** ger was a lowly servant or a slave. We might also compare it to "white trash"

Paul said that we should not do unnatural things. So a man loving a man is natural for the couple. What would not be natural is forcing a man who was not attracted to women to marry one. How would he do that anyhow? Look at gay porn before having sex?

Only a bisexual person can choose, and that is natural.

I do not doubt that the bible defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

    - But it doesn't. The only places it mentions marriage specifically it is one man and 300 women or one man and his wife and her maid. Things like that.

Jesus and Paul never provided models for proper relationships.

    - Paul did, if you read what he says, chances are he was gay.

So clearly, the definition is not black and white.

    - Absolutely.

Everything we associate with "traditional" marriage is absent from the bible.

    - For several millenia "traditional marriage" in all cultures and societies was polygamy. The church made that a sin about 1000 years ago when they discovered that they could control people and make a ton of money by controlling sex.

Correct me on any point, but based on what I see, marriage is fluid.

    - It wasn't an issue until the church came up with a money making scheme.

    Am I wrong?

    - No, you are absolutely correct.

It dose say Between a man and a woman!

In 1 Cor, chapters 5 & 6 are the instructions for homosexuals to Never even be permitted into a church of God's! That If one needs help, to help them outside of the church! So their anti God ways will not be spread to others! This is only here because too many Christian refuse to Kill other Sinners as is ordered in the Old and New Testament with Jesus own words.

In the Old Testament, here are a few. Read Lev. 18:22 - 29., 20:10, 20:13 "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

Death is required even IF and man and woman that are Not married to each other are found having sex!

Death for homosexuals and bi-sexual also! Death was with most sins! They did not have jails!

Not wanting to embarrassed or killed - people obeyed!

I think those Christians who get upset about marriage aren't considering the full picture about what marriage practices were and are extant in the world. They think they are protecting "the sanctity of marriage" when marriage was never a sanctified thing in the world. Even in America, children used to get married, and some still do in some states. In America some get married to multiple wives. People get married in America for reasons of money, convenience, and for reasons of gaining access to a long stay in this country. People get married, in America, without the Biblical God in mind.

So the Christians who want to "protect the institution of marriage have to turn a blind eye to what is going on. But the most important thing is that they are causing the church to be viewed as a sociopolitical organization instead of a spiritual organization. We are supposed to be telling people how to make peace with God. So the purpose of the church is corrupted.

Legal age for marriage in America:

New Hampshire: 18, 14 for males and 13 for females, in cases of "special cause" with parental consent and court permission.

Texas: 18, 14 to 17 with parental or judicial consent [11

Massachusetts: 18 for first marriage, 14 (male) 12 (female) with parental and/or judicial consent.[2]

California: 18, no minimum with approval of a superior court judge and parental consent.[4]

Georgia: 18, 15 with parental consent, 16 without parental consent if pregnant.[2]

    Hawaii: 18, 15 with parental consent.[2]

    etc.

I have added you to my contacts because I am gleeful that you know that you're going to hell.

I do this if only because I hate you. You are the person I hate the most in the entire world.

Make no mistake when I said that I'm going to kill you.

Hell is not a place at all, but everlasting destruction and oblivion is real. This will be your fate on the day of judgement.

You can count on my advice that God hates you, you loathsome creature. For I and My Father are one. John 10:30

because its wrong. all men did not have many wives. a concubine was not considered a wife. so your wrong. marriage is not fluid. they had a marriage ceremony and a feast on the day of the marriage. the man then took his new wife and they spent the night together having sex to consummate the marriage. you obviously do not read he bible that much. Matthew 22King James Version (KJV)

22 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,

2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

    Genesis 29:21-22King James Version (KJV)

21 And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

Jesus himself said that marriage was between one man and one woman.

Many of the apostles, including Peter, were married men and took their wives with them on missionary work.

The mulitiple marriages of the old testament were tolerated by Jehovah, he did not condone it and certainly it was stopped.

The new testament tells us homosexual acts are an abomination to God.

You either believe God's word or you dont. You cant try to twist it to suit your purposes.

Jesus' ministry was to correct the following of lies by Judaizers. He said to them, even after David and Solomon and Moses had had multiple wives that from the beginning it was one man and one woman. This shows that truth never needs revision.

There's no point asking this question. The reactions are going to be the same as always from both sides.

You're not wrong. People cherry-pick the Bible to support their own pre-existing beliefs.
