When did Christianity fall in the UK?

Britain was quite well known for it's Christianity and even the Queen seems to keep it alive in some aspect. But how come all of a sudden people in the UK overall do not claim to have a religion? Did something happen that may have caused this?

    1. Centuries of civil war, atrocity, persecution, and blood shed through religious turmoil between different denominations and churches.

    2. Bloody wars of the 20th Century, drove many to lose faith.

    3. Links between the Anglican church and the Establishment - and the incredibly dire services of that church. Literally boredom driving the masses out.

    4. Consumerism. The modern English working class has dissolved into the consumer class. They have no interest in religion. They are more interested in TV talent shows and in the Xbox.

It is important to note that most English (I can't speak for the others) do not openly declare themselves as atheist, and perhaps are not atheist. Most are merely apathetic towards religion, and are often suspicious of it. Many people are generally atheist, but to wear it like a badge is considered as suspicious as the religious zealots. We are a tolerant people, and to discuss either religion or atheism can be seen as impolite and even divisive.

    Source(s): English agnostic atheist.

I've been thinking the exact thing! I myself am a 17 year old Christian from the UK and what I think is the thing which is making Britain lose Faith is mine and my parents generation. The 1950s/60s changed it all! Teenagers stopped obeying their parents and lived the way they wanted to(this included rejecting religion) and those teenagers who did this are our parents now and obviously weren't Religious themselves so they didnt teach us about the Bible like their parents probably would of. Christianity will never die but it is falling in the UK due to either refusal to look into Religion or lack of knowledge!

    I hope this helped :)

For those who oppose the comment, it is still the most prevalent religion, yes... But it IS declining.

As with all religions, they rise and fall. Thousands of years ago, Christianity was the alien religion, invading the druids native to the region. Before the druids, it was likely animistic tribes. All religions fall and give way to another. Hell, for alls we know, in a hundred years, Islam might be the most prevalent religion here, not being racist, just stating it as a possibility.

There were several colonies on the island who shared words and the English language came to be as a result around the 300's AD.

In the 600's AD., St. Augustine went to England to make converts. The language was rudimentary; so he brought many Greek words in to describe spiritual realities.

I know this is a result of doing research on the English language. That answers your question, plus...

No one can become a Christian unless God draws them to Jesus. He uses people like me to tell them about him. It's very likely that technology has been part of the reason why so many ignore the call. The truth is being heavily guarded. I'm saying is probably a timing thing.. Why people are turning away from God.

Christianity is experiencing a steady decline in all but the poorest, most desperate and most uneducated parts of the world. That's the usual expected outcome of teaching people to think, giving them access to facts and providing a steady and reliable standard of living. Without desperation there is no need to resort to desperate measures therefor religions necessarily decline and eventually fail.

The Church did not stand up against lies! Must say no to evolution, sodomy, and all evil! Now UK is enslaved in EU and they still don't get it. " If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."- The Word of God. Repent and Believe! And then UK will be awesome again.

The UK has an established church, the Church of England, and the Queen is its head on Earth. Many people are rejecting religion because Britain has a good education system. It is the same in all western nations where education is important. In the USA, education is not important. That is why they allow schools to be run by elected school boards, many of which are composed of fundamentalist Christians who do not want children to be educated.

Education is the death of fundamentalist religion of all varieties.

Anywhere with limited regulation of the Internet and widespread access by its citizens I expect religion to fail.

As a whole Europe's decline in Christianity was due to Evoluion, Big Bang, billions of years old earth, etc...

We live in what's called a post-modern era where indoctrinated kids are being taught in secular schools that science has all the answers and only answers to explain the origins of life. Kids are so lost now as data show, break down of the family, abortion rates, depression, suicide rates, etc...

The fell for the same philosophical foolishness that tried to destroy them nearly half a century before.
