Are you required to take maternity leave?

I was told by a coworker that you are required to take six weeks off of work after you have a baby. Is this at all true? If so, there is no way I could afford to not work for six weeks (my employer doesn t offer paid maternity leave). Are there any solutions to this problem?

    No. You do not have to take 6 weeks off if you don't want to. Your coworker needs to cut back on the booze.
