Need help with my story?
What kind of curse should my main character have?
So my main character finds out that she's adopted and begins to search for her birth mother. She soon finds out that she is cursed and her mother gave her up in order to protect her. The curse is passed down each generation to a female member of the family.
The only way to end the curse is for the female to kill herself with a special dagger. This also prevents the curse from affecting the next generation.
Side note: The curse not only affects the female, but it affects the people around her as well. Because the curse is that bad, people are searching for the dagger so they can kill the girl.
I'm having trouble figuring out what the curse should be. Any ideas?

well there are a few things to consider.
1. the area of effect of the cruse
2. the symptoms of the curse
3. how the curse effects the story
the area of effect in this case is important because it is impactful towards others which cause them to want her to be killed. for it to be severe, our best choice would either be that whoever comes into contact with her becomes cursed, or that the cruse spreads like a contagious disease. however the latter decision would have the world infected very quickly, to such an extent that they may not know who the cause of the curse is.
next, what you want the curse to actually do. it's best for the curse to somehow have an impact on the story. this could be through symbolism, plot devices, etc. what you don't want is a curse that is not relevant other than a nuisance. for example, a curse in which you hear a low droned ringing noise all the time is annoying sure but not very meaningful towards the plot. it's good to consider a curse that provides a hindrance but does not severely harm the people affected by it. for example, having everyone go blind would be a step too far but having everyone's skin turn green wouldn't be far enough.
my suggestion would be that, given the considerations above, the curse be that whoever comes in contact with the girl slowly deteriorates in health over time, becoming sicker and sicker until they eventually die. however the girl herself does not feel these symptoms and the curse affects solely those she comes in contact with. this is good because it allows the protagonist to seem less selfish. rather than trying to cure the curse primarily for herself she is trying to save those affected by it. second it allows room for a bit of mystery; why is she the only one not growing sicker, etc.
ofcourse whatever direction you go with is your choice but that's just my opinion. one task you should keep in mind is how the people learn about the curse and how they learn to stop it. that is something you'd need to figure out on your own.

Who has the dagger?
Someone in the family has a book that has a riddle in it that tells what to do with the dagger so the curse can be lifted.
Solve the riddle and break the curse.
She goes to see her mother and ask questions. Her mother does not know.
It would be interesting to meet odd relatives in their houses.
The first relative told her she/he was told part of the riddle.
Someone read the riddle and did not understand it and gave the book away. And this person told part of the riddle and no more.
"Go to see the blood," the first relative told her. "I don't know where are what the blood is."
"Blood is an old expression that means a relative," she said.
She goes to see the aunt that has the book.
She opens the book that is titled, "The Curse,"and finds a blank page. The aunt tells her she has to put a drop of a portion of a liquid that's in a blue bottle that is sitting by the book. When she drops a drop of it on the riddle, a big puff of smoke or something pops up..she can read the riddle.
The curse....the curse.
Go to the shore
the sea shore
And you want more
There's a place on the shore
Look for more
The waves come in the waves come out
The tide comes in and the tide goes out
Look for more
Find the large flat rock
Look for more
Find the white large rock shaped like an alter.
Place the dagger on the rock and burn.
Chat, "Take your curse away. Who ever you are. Are you Satan?' four times.
She asks the aunt which relative lives by the sea.
She and the aunt go to see the relative that lives by the sea.
One sign of the curse can be the feeling the hand is hot or evil thoughts.

Curse to sterilize every woman within a 5 ft radius. Think about how devastating it is.
I guess this is a children's story but stabbing yourself with a dagger isn't so kid friendly.
