If I work at a thrift store, would it go against policy to buy stuff there and sell it on Ebay?

Update:

Such incredible responses. Thank you kindly.

The manager mentioned, in general, to all employees that we are not to sell to a third party without providing any backup for such a claim. Perhaps I should read the entire employee handbook, BUT common business sense tells me it is absolutely legal to buy and sell from any thrift store even if one is an employee there.

Update 2:

Rephrase: The manager mentioned, in general to all employees and without providing any backup for such a claim, that we are not to sell to a third party. common business sense tells me it is absolutely legal to buy and sell from any thrift store even if one is an employee there.

I don't see how. If the same products are offered for sale to the general public at the same prices, then I don't see an issue.

Even if you get an employee discount, it should still be OK. After all, you are just buying the the goods they sell under the pricing they offer to you.

I wouldnt tell your manager since those items are intended to sell to customers at full price usually for money that for charity, and you would be buying at a discount, so they are intended for you only. You can go to another thrift store and buy items. That would be more ethical. You can get items from anyplace to sell on Ebay as far as Ebay is concerned.

The only conflict I can see is that they may require items to be on display/for sale for a certain amount of time before being sold to employees, that way all of the "good stuff" isn't taken right away by the people that work there.

Ultimately though I don't think it matters as long as you aren't stealing the items and are paying what they ask.

Actually most states are "right to work" states and can fire you for any reason or no reason at all. If you tick off your boss don't expect to work there much longer. That's the truth of it.

This is the companies policy not a law. I for one one find it horrible that anyone would want to make money this way.
