Without the religious contentions..... what might you be punishing yourself for and why??
The religious like their "I've been forgiven" cop out... but for people without religious belief.... what's done is done. No self-punishment will change that.
Fasting isn't harmful as long as it isn't prolonged. After 4-5 days your muscles can start to break down and cause you serious problems. So yeah.... it's okay..... for up to 3 days.

i dont think fasting is self punishment, it is meant to be a healthy way to let our digestive system relax and at teh same time it is appointed unto israel as a way of giving away food for the needy. people voluntarily gave up what they thought could do without while still providing for their own welfare while at the same time provide that others may have welfare enough to continue living.

That depends upon what you hope to gain. Self-punishment will not save your soul, nor make atonement for your sins.

You could fine more creative ways of punishing yourself......like following the lives of the Kardashians or getting a tattoo on your privates, or becoming a republican

I suppose if you want to, sure. Biblically speaking though, that's not what fasting is.
