What is this? Is it a parasite?

I am growing a tree. It is cottonwood, about eight years old. When trimming its branches, I noticed a growth looking thing (pictured) should I be worried about the life of my tree?

Yes, a gall usually formed by an insect....or insects who "worry" or "sting" the plant forcing this excess growth forming a nice nest for laying eggs and raising babies. Just snip it off and throw away.

Looks like a gall of some sort. Not a threat to the health of the tree.
