Do Japanese Women's Surnames Change When Married?

    Usually they will take the husband's surname.

    But there are cases where the husband marries into the woman's family, and adopts the wife's surname instead - this often happens when the woman's family has no male heir to continue their family name.

    Yes - the law actually requires married couples have the same surname, and gender bias means that they usually end up taking the man's name.

    According to this article most of the time women's surname's do change. "The 113-year-old law requires married couples to choose just one surname for the man and woman to share, and custom means it's usually the man's. "
