Is it possible to reshape a splint that the doctor made sloppily and is uncomfortable?

My girlfriend hurt her foot and had to get a splint on her foot but the back of it where her achilles tendon is he pinched in an odd shape so it hardened in a way that is clearly very uncomfortable to wear. We were wondering if it is possible to add hot water or do something so we could reshape it a little to actually fit the back of her foot the way it should?

That depends on the material of the splint. You mentioned "hot water," so I'm guessing you're probably referring to a *thermoplastic splint. It's a plastic material which is softened in hot water to become pliable, then trimmed and shaped to fit the limb.

YES, you can repeat the process *with some types* of thermoplastic, dipping the splint into hot water again until it becomes soft enough to make adjustments. I've actually done this myself, but you have to be very careful about it. Some thermoplastic sheets are high heat (like boiling water) and some are low heat. Also, some kinds don't take to reheating very well-- they never get as soft as the first time. The best shot at fixing the splint would be if you're only trying to refit a small area.

Whether the splint is plaster or fiberglass, the answer is no.

Two suggestions. 1, try some soft padding between the splint and the tendon. 2, see a doc for a new splint.
