Sewer Line Replacement?

My sewer line needs replacing. It runs from the front of my house about 50 , under a sidewalk and, I assume, under the asphalt road in front of my house where it connects to the city main. Question - Will the have to tear up the sidewalk and part of the street to replace it?

Perhaps, but not necessarily. BTW, this is referred to as a sewer lateral. The plumbing company will certainly try their best to remove and replace the line under the sidewalk without the sidewalk being removed. However, they will not know until they dig into the areas around the sidewalk,

I'd check around a whole lot before I hired anyone to do that. The "This Old House" show had a segment last year where they showed a relatively new procedure which basically put a liner in an old sewer pipe so it didn't have to be replaced. Saved the home owner a whole lot of money.

Probably not. They have ways of bore underneath or through the existing. You should discuss this with your plumber before they get started so you understand the scope of work they plan to do. In some cases the pipes under the side walk and street would be considered city property and you would only be responsible for the pipes up to the property line. But it varies so talk to the plumber.
