Solids at 5 or 5.5 months for full term baby?

I read everywhere 4-6 m is recommended. If my child was 40.5 weeks old when born can I start at 5 or 5.5 months? He is 17 lbs and EBF. What are the cons of starting early (plan to do BLW).

Thx

Okay so no solids until six months AND baby can sit up.

Full term doesn't mean your baby is any more physiologically advanced than a baby born at 38 weeks or so. If you child had been born premature, then you could worry about corrected age. But the six month recommendation is for FULL TERM babies, ie ones born between 38 and 42 weeks.

Just wait. You are plaining on baby led weaning anyway so why the rush, chances are a 5.5 month baby would be fine, but why not wait just to be sure. You also have to take into account that when baby is 6 months he still might not be interested at all.

Starting solids too early could cause huge digestive problems in the future. Best not to risk it eh?

I was a strict rule follower and waited until 6 months, as per WHO's recommendations. By 6 months, the baby's digestive system and gut are mature enough to digest solids. If introduced too early, the baby may develop Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other digestive problems as an adult. Every baby develops at different rates, some gut's will mature at 5 months and some at 6. The problem is there is no way of knowing, so it's advisable that everyone wait until 6 months to be sure.

5.5 months is very close to the recommended 6 months, it's like likely that it would harm your baby, but likewise, if you've waited 5.5 months, what's another 2 weeks to wait until he is 6 months?

The current recommendations are 6 months, by all the major medical organizations. The only place you will see 4-6 months is older references and the label of baby food jars (which are selling baby food, not giving health advice). Just because your baby was a few days post date doesn't mean he is any more mature. I would wait for 6 months before giving solids. There's no rush. Feeding solids too early can cause damage to the gut.

Why? Why do women feel the need to rush this? Honestly I dont even start to feed my babies jared food till they are 9months. At six months the only only thing I introduce is pablum. Thats it. It is a simple rice cereal that you add either breast milk or warm water to (Its a canaidian thing.) Dont rush your baby it causes bigger problems then just holding out a little longer :/
