What's the process of adopting an underage (15yr old) foster child whose only living relative is in jail?
This is for a story I'm writing. I was considering adding a court scene but I don't really know the legal logistics involved. If the child is 15, what is the adoption process like if his mother has passed and his father is in jail and there are no other relatives in story.
All info. is helpful. Thanks.

A child with a father in jail and no other living relatives would be living in a home (more likely a residential home/school than a foster situation) and, as such, wouldn't be available for adoption. The father, whether in jail or not, is still the legal guardian. So to adopt such a child (and a 15 year old is still classed as a child) would be a very complicated process, and likely would not happen. The reason is that at 16 the child would reach the age of consent, and in another 2 years, would be legally an adult. So the likelihood of being available for adoption is remote. The adoption process takes about 2+ years, so your 15 year old would be on the brink of adulthood, and thus out of reach of an adoptive parent.
