problem with my generator?
So last night, I noticed the red light on my generac generator was lit up, and when I flipped the top to read the LCD display, it read this: "stopped-alarm. RPM sense loss." Any idea on what that means?

Not knowing the model to look it up, I can only give you general advice as a long time generator repair mechanic. There is ether a mechanical governor speed sensor gone bad or on some models there is a fuse from the engine ignition magneto that feeds the rotor flashing module power / speed info that may have possibly blown. Your model is obviously a hard wired auto-flip on model. Post the actual model # info and I'm sure you will get a more accurate answer.

Look in your manual parts list and exploded view for the RPM sensor location and check the wire harness connector.

Turn the generator to the "off" position. Call Generac and ask for your area's service company. Call them and set up an appointment. Hopefully it's only the speed sensor as they are easy to replace. A bad control board will also give the same alarm when it can't read the sensor voltage. Either way this is something you can't fix. The control board or the sensor has to be replaced. Good luck!

The RPM of the generator has to be held as precisely as possible to maintain the proper frequency output, like 60 hz. As renpen said it may be a bad RPM sensor (RPM sense loss) so it can't sense what the RPM is and thus can't regulate the speed. If the RPM goes to high or low then the output frequency of the voltage could be too high or low and cause damage to various devices.

Sounds like you have a bad RPM sensor. Doesn't the manual tell you what this fault means?
