    At the time the cartoon was made, he was supposed to be a "hippie" or a "beatnik" slacker character. The "stoner" interpretation came later, once stoners began to be a stereotype in popular culture.

    They needed a character that the hippies cold identify with

    He was the model for "Spicoli" on fast times .
