My Husband and the Housekeeper?

I was sitting with my sick husband at the Hospital when the housekeeping lady came in. She greeted my husband in Spanish and he greeted her back and they started talking. I was just sitting there minding my own business watching the small TV. My husband is Pueto Rican and so was the Housekeeper and he likes to practice speaking Spanish with strangers sometimes and it doesn't bother me at all. Suddenly the housekeeper saise to me "You don't speak Spanish?" I said no and smiled nicelyand went back to watcher TV. She then had the nerve to ask me why don't you speak Spanish?. I told here I was Irish and I spoke English. She then said "Your should learn to speak Spanish. At that point I was quite irritated that this women would think it was OK to talk to me someone she never met before in such a manner. I told her I did not like the way she was speaking to me. At that point she just went on to chatter away with my husband in Spanish the entire time she was cleaning around the room which took her at least 5 or more additional minutes. After thinking about it I am now upset with my husband, knowing that I did not like the way she was talking to me that he just continued to just keep talking with her in Spanish with me sitting there. I think he should have answered anymore of her questions in English and not have encougaged her any further. And on her way out she turned and gave me a dirty look.

Language choice is a very personal thing. Some people get quite annoyed if you persist with your own language. Some go to the other extreme and resent it if you use theirs. I speak several languages quite well, but I tread very carefully in this area, since every one responds or not in their own way! But try not to show such childish prejudice yourself. It is only natural that your Spanish-speaking husband should use that language with other native speakers. Do not resent this, but do not allow yourself to be pressured into learning it unless you really want to. If she is just suggesting you do so, tell her politely that you have no head for languages, and if she persists, just tell some white lie about going to try to get your husband to teach you someday. But smile rather than look annoyed: it is really no big deal.

She's right, you should learn some Spanish. You don't have to become fluent, but it's arrogant of you to just assume that you don't need to because your husband also speaks English.

If she was talking in a nice kind way then you should not be offended. It might be an excellent opportunity for you to learn Spanish and a wise choice. It is entirely up to you.

I think it is a good idea to learn Spanish, particularly since you are married to a Puerto Rican, so you have the opportunity.

Open your eyes and watch your husband.

If you suspect that he is interested in this woman, send him to hell.

All she said was that you should learn Spanish, that is in no way rude. I often tell my friends they should learn my language.
