Best arrangement of disc drives for my needs?

Okay, so I have my OS on an SSD, and all other programs on a 250gb HDD. I was going to use another HDD for storing files, but it kept suddenly spinning down. I ordered a 1Tb replacement (I only make short videos and try to edit "in camera"( Annnyways, I ealised that the problime with the third drive was fixed simply by using a better quality SATA cable. So, now I have a 120GB SSD with my operating system on it. (And whatever junk I can't prevent from being written there, and possibly a few programs, too) a 250gb drive with my programs on (plus a load of files), an empty, but now working 250 GB HDD, and an empty 1TB HDD.

Sooo...I'm thinking of leaving the OS on the SSD., Leaving the other programs on the first HDD, Using the 1TB HDD for raw footage and the files I'm working with, and using the remaining 250GB HDD for rendering animations and videos to.

Is that the best arrangement here? (My PSU has plenty of headroom) I imagine that there's a performance advantage, in that heads aren't jumping around trying to read and write data at the same time, but that's just what seems to make sense to me. For all I know there's a serparate "read" and "write" head.

Inside the hard drives there are several platters and each one of them has it's own head (a single one for both reading and writing). For maximum speed, you don t need to have indexing on your SSD as it runs so fast it doesn t need it. Defragmenting hard drives is the best way to keep optimal efficiency but you can't do that with an SSD - you have to use the TRIM command if your drive supports it.

As for which order to put your files, obviously windows is better on the SSD - if you have space, anything else that you use regularly would be faster if it was on an SSD rather than a hard drive. Unfortunately yours is only 120Gb so there s not much capacity left. You could also buy another SSD for regular software but of course it's expensive.

I have one SSD and several hard drives and I tend to partition the drives so that I'm organized - I'll keep games on one drive or partition, then another for installed software, another for software setup programs, one for music, one for movies, one for family photo's and video's (I always back these up to blu-ray). That way if ever my computer goes down I've minimized the chance of losing important stuff.
