What exactly is the Digimon franchise about?

I watched the anime. It is about kids travaled to another wildlife world to meet and befriend digital monsters and to fight evil. But I tried some Digimon games, and they have nothing similar to the anime. Reading the wiki make me even more confusing.

Pokémon anime and games are more consistent, and I can easily tell what it is about. But I cannot tell what Digimon is about.
