Do you grow mung beans in soil or cotton?

my dad said cotton, but the web says soil

    Soil if you're growing the plant (to produce more beans), cotton or other soilless method if you're making bean sprouts to eat.

    Soil-- cotton is quite expensive plus would degrade and break down.

    Plant them directly in soil or they will die.
