I don`t think so; there is a stage
whilst in the discipline of studying Phil,
where one gets to abstract reasoning..it is as close to original thinking as one can generally go
a kind of free - thinking joy..unless upon a spiritual quest, where that in itself is an aim,
and leaves one with fine - honed faculty of critical thinking.Which is not at all either/ or thinking
so if one`s lucky in that way it`s worth such mental slogging,
and is as some people are about math.imo.

Is the study of philosophy proof that dogs enjoy chasing their tails?
~~~ That you ask that, is proof that you have no clue what philosophy is.
It sounds more like sour grapes to me.
But in case you were really interested, rather than just whining about your own limitations;
Philosophy is 'original critical thought';
As opposed to the 'scholastic';
"..."philosophologists", a term coined by Robert Pirsig ("Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", "Lila") to denote people who study other people's philosophy but cannot do philosophy themselves. He also says that most people who consider themselves philosophers are actually philosophologists. The difference between a philosopher and a philosophologist is like the difference between an art and aesthetics; one does and the other studies what the other does and theorizes about it."
