Where did ISIS actually come from?

As far as I can tell they just kind of showed up at one point and started shooting everyone and committing war crimes and such. When'd they start up? Why are they doing what they're doing? Do they really think a couple thousand people can win against 7 billion? How can they see a guy get decapitated and want to join in? I don't get it, it makes no sense to me at all.

They sprang from members of al Qaeda in Iraq, who wanted the return of a fundamentalist caliphate over all of the muslim lands (including those which were once muslim like most of Spain). In their view God is on their side, and He will help them to defeat all the 'non-believers' from America, Europe, Iran and their 'puppet governments' in Syria, Iraq, etc..

As they look forward to dying for the cause because it will allow them to go straight to Heaven, they have an advantage over their opposition who prefer to stay alive by running away or attacking only from the air. A few thousand in Iraq managed to defeat an Iraqi government army of hundreds of thousands, and take many of their US supplied weapons.

A major cause of the problem is Saudi Arabia, which has used its vast oil wealth to spread a puritanical version of Sunni Islam, called Wahhabi'ism, all over the muslim world. As such ISIS (who are Wahhabis) have a huge amount of underlying support or sympathy. Also concepts like the Ummah and caliphate have always appealed to muslims, referring as they do back to a supposed golden time in the early years of the faith. And ideas cannot be defeated militarily.

As for acts like decapitation and stoning, they are in fact religiously sanctioned punishments under Sharia law. Indeed some Islamic countries still use them. Also, them and practices like veiling women are in the Bible, so are technically Christian too.

Remember Bush' nemises Al Qaeda? ISIS was excreted from it, for being too extreme. Al Qaeda thought ISIS' barbarity was likely to cost it western sympathy.

However ISIS social media proclivities got it more "followers" from Europe.

"In 2002, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian and leader of Tawhid wa al-Jihad (Organization of Monotheism and Jihad), established al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Following Zarqawi’s death in 2006, AQI morphed into Islamic State in Iraq (ISI). In April 2013, ISI, with a military presence in Iraq and Syria, was rebranded the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). The Islamic State (IS) was decreed in June 2014."

They are the product of the power vacuum after Saddam got overthrown. Troublemakers of various ideologies and backgrounds got together and recently were able to make ISIS take off.

Compare ANY large Non-Government Organization and how it expands to ISIS. A Labor Union as

an example. Workers in one Business 'unite' and 'negotiate' beneficial workplaces and wages.

They select "Team Leaders" (the LOCAL CHAPTER President) Other workers' groups "look into"

the organization and the Union expands.

WESTERN Governments are 'asked' by Businesses to Support them, including their activities in

Foreign Countries (Britain, France & US for Oil in Muslim-Arabian countries). Foreign Citizens

aren't included in "their" Government's 'deals' with foreigners and "rise up!" WESTERN Armies

invade and >Win< (however WIN is defined). The surviving 'rebels' look for SUPPORT; Osama bin

Laden had his OWN money; he rejected US funding to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. The result

was bin Laden started "al Queda", his Afghan fighters became Taliban. The US invaded again.

Then invaded Iraq chasing "al Queda" and conquering Saddam Hussein. THE SURVIVORS met,

found sponsors and formed ISIL -- Islamic State in Syria and the Levant (Lebanon and part of

Syria). They began in Syria for two reasons; "President" Assad is a Dictator/Tyrant -- Syria is a

'moderate' US Ally in the Middle East. ISIL defeats ASSAD while keeping the US under attack.

When the US largely left Iraq ISIL (now called ISIS for Media convenience) expanded to incude

war against the 'perceived' US Puppet Regime in Iraq.

RUSSIA has "butted in" to distract attention from what they're doing elsewhere. Vladimir Putin wants

to restore the Soviet Union with himself in charge.

They are an amalgamation of other groups that have been forming for years against western aka Christian invasion. Here is an article that explains the movement. I think there are 30,000 and they get recruits all the time. I cannot explain the psychological reasons a westerner joins ISIL (or Daesh, or IS).
