Why do non-European countries compete in the European football championships?

Counties like Turkey (only partially in Europe), Israel, Georgia, Armenia, Kazachstan and Azerbeidzjan are clearly in Asia. Perhaps the Netherlands team can try their hand at the Africa-cup or something then as well?

Simply: Can you guard some Israeli fans in Baghdad against thousands of fanatic Islamic Arabs? Or maybe in Tehran or maybe in Beirut??

"The Israel Football Association joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1954, but was expelled in 1974 due to political pressure from Arab and Muslim members in the context of the Arab–Israeli conflict. It was admitted to UEFA as an associate member in 1992 and as a full member in 1994, therefore their teams compete as part of Europe in all international competitions." (Wikipedia).

By the way, if you hate Israel so much, you should be glad. In Asia - Israel is one of the strongest countries, and would be qualified to the World cup games each time. However, winning Spain, England, Belgium, Germany etc. is tough mission, which Israel haven't succeeded yet...

Israel is the only country that is not in europe (or at least shares a small part of land with the continent.) And it plays in UEFA because most muslim countries in the region do not want to play ISrael for political reasons. I mean serious could you imagine a game Iran vs Israel played in Teheran??? ;)

Armenia and Azerbaijan are not Asian countries. They are 100% in Europe. The border is to the south of the former Soviet union and through the Caspian Sea.

Kazakhstan is for a (small) part inside Europe. The border is on the Ural-river and a part of Kazakhstan is West of that river and so in Europe.

Israel is the only UEFA-member that isn't in Europe at all. But because we can't play in Asia (or Africa) because them Muslim countries keep us out. So that's why we joined UEFA.

Before while in UEFA we played WC-qualifying matches with the OFC (Oceania) countries sometimes or play-off's versus other countries.....

    The answer is known.

Arabs are no match to Israelis, even in soccer.
