Does he really care?

I dated this guy for a month and a half. Because I knew how busy he was Because he's pledging for a frat. At the beginning, when he had time, he came and saw me between breaks and after his frat duties, but as weeks go by and he becomes busier than he already was, he couldn't see me as often. He sleeps over whenever my roommate leaves and sometimes asks if he can stay over. A couple days ago, I told him that I felt like I was dragging him down because he could rarely talk to me, not even through text. He said I wasn't and he said to me that the last thing he needs is a relationship and he told me from the beginning. He says he likes me a lot and cares about me a lot and won't stop caring about me and that he would be there for me. He doesn't want to stop talking though, but he never replies really... When he said he cared about me a lot, it didn't seem to show at all when we were together during the last to weeks. Even though he slept over, we never really talked anymore and when I would go out, even if he's there, I always tell him in leaving and when I'm alone, he never asks how I'm getting back or who is driving me. I just felt starting from when he got busier, he stopped trying and caring. When he said he likes me a lot, I couldn't tell either but my friend talks about me all the time with him and she says that he has the biggest smile when they do talk about me. Do you think he cared a lot and was just saying that or did he really care, but didn't show it enough?
