Tripling the size is not really going to tell us much more than the LHC. Perhaps thirty times the size and we just might see some new science, if there's any there to see.

Imagine if they build the thing and it does nothing but confirm what the LHC has found, and is effectively just an exercise in "me too". I bet there'd be some high ranking officials who would just quietly disappear.

I thought the Chinese were smarter than that.

Good luck to them. The LHC is not German, CERN is an international collaboration of several countries, and the LHC straddles the border between Switzerland and France.

The US pulled out halfway building the SSC because it was too expensve (and the political will was lacking). Maybe China can do better.

As I recall, the coil exploded because it lost coolant. CERN considered it a design flaw, and shut down the ring to replace all similar magnets. No-one was hurt. Hardly a disaster.

My mind tells me that the LHC is on the border of France and Switzerland. If there was an explosion at the LHC people living five kilometres away probably would not notice.
