As long as Assad has defenders like Putin he will hold the north of Syria. And as long as ISIS exists refugees will be driven of Syria to come to Europe. Now with the attacks in Paris we see ISIS making sure they can drive them out to expand and take over Syria and cause no one to even trust refugees from Syria.
