Hot dogs contain what is referred to as "mechanically separated meat." This consists of any meat left on the bone that remains after the standard cutting and processing of saleable pieces of meat. It could also contain any pieces of fat or other trimmings. Organ meats like liver and intestines are very strongly flavored, and this would not be masked by the emulsion process used to create the sausages, nor would salt or seasoning cover it up. Hence sausages made with all these ingredients would not sell very well in the US.

Now that is not to say that some things other than meat might end up in the hot dog emulsion. One link I found references a report in which human DNA was discovered in 2% of samples - you can work out at least some of the multitude of ways that might happen. Veg*ns will be dismayed to find that 10% of the samples of veg*n hot dogs mentioned in the report also appear to contain meat.

If this really bothers you, then don't read any further and don't click on the second link. You consume an estimated 2+ pounds annually of rodent hairs/excrement, insect parts/eggs/larvae/excement, cigarette butts, and all sorts of other nasty things in everyday food like flour, peanut butter, milk, and many more. Eating and drinking are not for the squeamish...

It is a myth, all those things are very tough and would not cook to the point of being edible, hot dogs are made from regular meat, ground and spiced, then re-ground into a paste like mass, stuffed into plastic or natural casings, smoked and steamed, then sold in packages, commercial one may only have smoke flavouring and be heated and steamed, they remove the outer casing before packing, over the years people have suggested all the meat and anything left over is used, it is not true, as the bit mentioned are cartilage or fibrous, and when you would eat the hot dog, it would like you had a mouth full of Lego's and Marbles.

Hot dogs usually contain all sorts of meat by products that would not be purchased separately.

    no,not lungs etc.

they do have meat that is scraps....the last bits removed off the bone, the meat off the head of the pig(its normal meat, just from a weird area) pork chops that got cut poorly, trimmed bits of meat off roasts and leg cuts, etc.

Home butcherers used bits like that for ground pork or sausage too. Because its trimmings doesn't mean its garbage, it just means its bits too small or odd to be sold as a proper cut of meat.

Just because your dog is hot doesn't mean it loses all of its organs.

    Just kidding, no.
