Introducing pets?

I've just started seeing someone. I've been to his place, but he hasn't been here yet because I'm not sure how his dog will get on with my cats. He's got a bouncy and excitable Jack Russell and I've got two cats, one of whom is chilled and friendly- the other is more nervous.

How can we introduce them in a way that won't be too stressful for everyone?

I had a JR and he chased and killed cats in the garden but was ok with them indoors. Start by introducing their scent to each other. Get some facecloths or dusters, and wipe the cats scent glands under their chin and over the eye brow. Your bf needs to do the same with his dog.

You keep wiping this scent around the other animals house, on the door frames at nose level, on you and your legs at nose level, and put the cloths in their bed.

Your bf also needs to teach his dog the 'gentle' command, I like to start that with feeding treats. You use the command 'gentle' in a very quiet tone of voice, and they have to take the treat gently.

Then he should have the dog approach you and use the command 'gentle'. You can then both treat him. Practice this over and over.

He can also get hold of a fur item and practice with that. Its less exciting than a live cat.

When he finally brings his dog over, it must be on the lead and under control. He should have had a mega walk first to tire him out.

He is going to get excited, so have the nervous cat out of the way and just have him in the same room as the more chilled cat. He just has to learn the cats are off limits. A running cat will be a huge temptation to chase, but if the chilled cat can be persuaded to sit still, maybe in your arms, then let him sniff and get the excitement over with.

    Best of luck!

Unfortunately Jackies have a high prey drive, and it could be the case that your cats will be fair game much as normally 'cats rule'. As you don't know where this relationship is going (?), right now I'd suggest he doesn't bring his dog into your home - no harm leaving him in the car (within reason - time and weather), bring a crate with him, leave him at home, keep him on a lead when in your home.

I have to agree with Julie! Including the comments!!

You just started seeing this person, for Heaven's sake. You aren't engaged to him! There's NO reason for him to bring is dog over to your house at this point. If he comes over to your place, he's coming to see YOU not to socialize his dog with your two cats. You didn't take your cats over to his place, did you? Well, then he doesn't need to bring his dog over to your place either. Wait to see if things go well with the both of you and if the relationship will even last. When and if things go smoothly and the relationship starts to blossom, or you think you might be moving in with each other, then think about introducing the pets. Don't put the cart in front of the horse.

There's no reason for him to bring his dog over to visit your cats.

It's not like you have another dog for it to play with.

Have him leave his dog at home ... you don't take your cats over to his house - why should he bring his dog over to possibly kill your cats?

If you want to sleep over - do it at his place. Your cats will be fine left at your home alone overnight with food, water and a clean litter box.

Forget it! Don't even get his dog within five miles of your cats.

JRT's are genetically wired to kill small mammals including cats, no amount of training will ever change that.

the best way would be to have the cats on one side of a glass door and the dog on the other, see how they react when they see each other and go from their, but always have the dog on the leash until you are certain they are ok so they cant harm each other if something goes wrong

Why does his dog have to come with him right off?
