Anybody teaching in California? Do you know if citizenship is required to teach in public elementary schools?

No, citizenship is not required. Some states have even recruited teachers from other countries in areas of need, like math, science, foreign languages and ESL. There's a lot of competition for elementary school jobs, so they are not going to sponsor you for a visa, but if you're already in the country legally, you can apply.

Permanent residency is required for any legal job, period. You don't need to be a citizen, but you do need to be legally able to work in the country.
