Why do Conservatives believe in banning drugs?

Conservatives portray their bans on things like drugs and, if they ever get away with it again, abortion as protections of society from harm. They hide behind the 2nd amendment to end any discussion on firearms, even though society may benefit from some protection from firearms too.

A lot of drugs are banned, yet people still get them.

Illegal drugs cause otherwise sane people to commit barbaric acts. How many times to you have to read about parents killing their children for you to understand.

Criminals "sell" illegal drugs. The difficulty in getting them all off the street is incredibly difficult. But is that a reason to make it legal? People have been murdering people since the beginning of time and that is not likely to stop. Since we will never stop murders, should we stop prosecuting those who commit these crimes?

I don't. While I think doing drugs is stupid I believe in freedom.
