I'm an online student and actually have one of the highest averages in my class right now and very good about being proactive about my studies as well as contacting my teachers and advisors in a timely matter.

Online students choose to do their work "whenever". This usually means "never" in practice. This includes reaching out to faculty. In my experience, students who are screwing up don't reach out, they run away and hope that somehow solves problems. It doesn't.
