Dell Inspiron 620 with Windows 10 having issues with USB connectivity.?

I have a Dell Inspiron 620 which was originally a Windows 7 machine, and upgraded to Windows 10 about 4 months ago. Machine is about 4-5 years old and has been working without problems until just a week or two ago.

Came home from work one night and found my mouse and keyboard were not working. Played around with rebooting and unplugging/plugging the USB dongle. This did not resolve the issue.

At one point during a reboot the computer started smoking from the power supply, so I shut it down and ordered a new power supply.

After rebooting with the new power supply, still no luck with the USB or the mouse keyboard.

Uninstalled the Logitech set point software, as well as all other related programs. Still not luck after reboot.

Installed a BIOS update, as well as chipset update from the Dell support site. Still no luck.

I am able to log into the computer via VNC, and everything seems to work normally with the exception of the USB ports. The ports are getting power because when I plug in my phone, it starts charging. However, the computer does not recognize my phone, or the USB dongle for the mouse and keyboard.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Dell Inspiron 620 Drivers

    Hi justin

This isnt unusual so dont think your system is unique .. after every new os release everybody gets problems ... i have lost my network driver ( network direct attached storage ) and that means ive lost many back ups

another problem is many desktops, laptops and graphic cards have been demoted to "legacy" products so this means the manufactuer will no longer support them ( in that i mean drivers, software, firmware ect ) .. and thats were we need to start

go into device manager ( via the vnc ) and look under the usb device list .. is there any that have a symbol next to it ... basically your looking for usb controllers and see if any are not installed .... this may be your problem ,however as ive allready said many systems are no longer supported,so instead of checking the dell website you need to find any required drivers via another route ( best way to do this is to find out the chipset of the device and then use this as a search criteria )

for example i installed a add on usb3.0 card and i lost the drivers ... i removed the card and checked out the name on the main chip .. i used that for my search and succesfully located the required drivers

now ive gone to the dell website and your dell inspiron 620 is " not tested for Windows 10 upgrade"( http://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukdhs1/prod... ) so i was correct in stating it was a legacy pc ... ive also checked the mouse, keyboard driver section and this was last updated in 2013 ..

so what i need you to do ( if possible ) is download a program called "sisoft sandra "( http://www.sisoftware.eu/download-lite/ ) .. install this and then run it .. this will then show all the components inside your pc but more importantly it will show you detailed specs about your usb devices ... look for the usb controller type ( eg via 4567 / example ) .. then when you discover what your pc,s usb controller is do a search and download the driver that uses the same usb controller chipset

now i need to warn you . this is a bit "hit and miss" and you could spend some time getting this to work .. on the other hand you may get it to work first time .....

also if you have problems installing the driver try installing it using windows compatibility mode ( and choose windows 7 ) ... this sometimes helps ,infact you could try installing the usb drivers from the dell website using this method .. it sometimes works

give this a go justin, and let me know if you require any further assistance

good luck mate and happy xmas !

OK, so if you cannot use USB ports, then downgrade to Windows 7 again. Your motherboard might never get drivers for Windows 10. Look for "Windows 7 Download" on the internet. You can use your own key. You can also use the recovery disc that may have came with your computer. If not, there will properly be someone selling one. Hope this helps!

I think you have a hardware problem. T

follow this link from Dell to test the USB

    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-...

If the USB has failed you could get a PCI USB card to get some usable USB ports
