Is there any real benefit to changing oil soon after purchasing a new automobile?

Break-in is wear-in, and a new engine sheds the most metal in the shortest time.

I have been instructing people since the1970s to give several oil changes early in the cars life, then every 3500 miles.

Many of my customers got over 200,000 miles on their 1970s and 1980s engines, back when engines were usually worn out at 100-125,000 miles.

Change at 500, 1000, 2000, 3500, then every 3500.

Follow the manufacturers suggestions. They made the car, they have tested how the engine performs during the running in period, and will have actually analysed the oil during the process.

So if they say to change the oil after 5,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first), then I suggest you do that. If they though there was an advantage to changing it earlier, they would tell you so.

Older engines that where built with looser tolerances and actually required a "run in" process often used a lower quality oil to allow some more wear to occur in the new engine. In that case you might have first changed the oil after only 1,000 miles, and started using better oil once the initial break in was done. But those days a long gone.

No, and in fact some manufacturers, notably Honda, use special oil on the initial fill and recommend leaving it in for the full breakin period. Other manufacturers just use plain oil but there is still little benefit from rushing to change the factory oil too soon.

It doesn't hurt to change the oil at 1,500 miles. You do need to put at least that many miles on the vehicle before changing to a synthetic oil. The piston rings don't break in properly if you start out too soon with synthetic oil.

Some would argue that changing the oil after 500 miles is a good idea. When engine parts are made and put together there is some rubbing/meshing of metal parts. Some say there would be bits of steel (chips or burrs) in the oil. If there were, they would eventually wind up in the oil pan. Its pretty much fifty fifty.

For a new vehicle? Zero. Only chance your oil, and filter, when needed (every 5k or so miles, in normal driving conditions). However, if it is used then it sure has hell couldn't hurt.

Not really. That is only true if you buy a dirtbike or go-kart from China. They only put cheap- showroom oil in there's.

A new one? No. A Used one though, definitely as you never know when it was changed last.
