I think anything under 5gallons shoujld not be sold as a good choice for keeping any fish. Bettas need a MINIMUM of 5 gallons with filter and heater and temps at 78-80.

Smaller containers are hard to keep clean, heat properly and should ONLY be used for a temporary place to keep a sick fish.

Not as a permanent fish home.

There are some occasions where a 2 gallon can be handy. I raise live foods and also bio luminescent plankton for fun and the 2 gallons are nice for those. They also can be nice for transporting fish, or short term treatments/baths to remedy some diseases. They can be used for plants and some fun aquascape nanos, and nano saltwater reef tanks can be a fun challenge for experts.

They should not be marketed as beginner tanks, or homes for fish that need a larger minimum tank. Really it is false advertising that is the problem, not the product itself. These companies should be held accountable for fraud/false marketing/lying.

Ohh, we have this law in my country! It's illegal to keep vertebrates in fish bowls and it's illegal to keep adult specimens of vertebrates in a container smaller than 8 gallons.

    So what did we achieve?

    * bowls are still sold because invertebrates can be kept in them.

    * tiny containers are still sold because you can use it as invert only setup or a grow out tank.

    * morons still use them for keeping fish

    * morons still don't know the first thing about keeping fish

    * the law allows for extremely overstocked tanks

Who the heck would barge into my house to check how I keep my fish, anyway?

Even in the field of pet care we have much more obvious, much more visible problems that are not cared for: e.g. dogs on tiny chains, wounds untreated, self-walking dogs etc.

Patience and education helps. Making stupid laws? Not really.

The smaller the tank the faster the water gets fouled.

I keep my Betta in a 5 gallon tank with some live plants.

The other Betta is in a 60 gallon tank with a school of Neon Tetras, and everybody is happy.

Do you think it would matter? People will put their fish into anything they want to. I see vases all the time with some sort of philodendron rooted in the water and a betta in the water. I'm fairly certain those vases weren't marketed as fish bowls.

If people will buy it, they will sell it. No, I don't like them but people still buy them.
