I need a real cop, preferably with some experience, to answer this question.?
Okay, so, I m a writer. I ve got this huge idea and the plot is working and the backstories are coming together, but I have a big problem. One of the main characters has Fugue Amnesia, so he can t even remember his name and has no ID on him. If he walks into a police station and asks for help, what happens?
Do they take finger prints? Check for tattoos? Send him to the hospital? Make him take a psych eval? Call a news station? Where do they put him?
If they do check for prints and they re not in their system, do they send the prints to a bigger facility? He s a retired marine (even though he doesn t know it), so yeah, his prints register SOMEWHERE, but how long is it going to take to find that somewhere?
Thanks in advance for anything you can give me, sorry for all the questions, I m just trying to be thorough.

That's for the heads up.
That is one awful story that I will be giving a large berth.
The military person with Amnesia has been done to death far too many times.
So expect a large collection of reject slips to drop no plunge in to your poor old mail box!
Oh and if that worn out tired cliche is any thing to go by the one thing you are not is a writer.

The actual answer varies with EVERY case. Even claiming an individual department would treat 2 cases the same is misleading at best.
Contrary to what Susie, claims, it is quite possible to be clearly of sound mind, but have amnesia. I suspect everyone involved would want medical evaluation, but that doesn't mean anyone believes the person is not of sound mind.
