Why do valves cause minor losses in fluids?

I'm performing an experiment involving measuring the differential head loss across a valve when the valve is opened by different fractions. I'm wondering what exactly causes losses in pressure/ energy as the fluid passes through the valve.

The changing shape of the opening almost always involves turbulence at some point - so the fluid is working against itself. Some of that energy goes to vibrating and eroding the valve body and valve closure mechanism.

Friction! it dissipates some energy in the form of heat.
