A heart murmur is just a sound in the heart beat. It is caused by any irregular structure in the heart. Sound in the heart is caused by the friction of the blood flowing through the heart. If anything alters that flow, the resulting sound is called a murmur.

A minor heart murmur really isn't much of an issue as long as there aren't any other symptoms. About 30% of the population has a heart murmur sound in their heart beat.

Irregular heartbeat is something entirely different. That is an electrical problem versus the heart murmur's structural problem. Yes, and electrical problem in the heart can cause cardiac arrest. But even people with higher risk diseases are looking at less than 2% chance per year.

Your doctor is telling you that you are fine. Trust that until you notice new symptoms, then get a new exam and see what changed. Your doctor isn't going to mislead you.

Did the Dr. say to worry and that there is a problem? Nope. He said it's normal. Know what else is normal? Having a cardiac arrest when you're over 45 years old. Many people do it. You've got plenty of time for cocaine and cheeseburgers. The bigger thing to worry about is your need for a bunch of strangers to know your given name. Weird. That might get you into trouble, Harry.
