While WWE did sign AJ Styles shortly before Daniel Bryan's retirement, I doubt the WWE signed Styles specifically to replace Daniel Bryan. Because AJ Styles always was a hot free agent, they would have likely signed him even if Daniel Bryan was still healthy and active. The fact that the WWE isn't booking AJ Styles similar to Daniel Bryan can also indicate that he might not actually be his replacement.

They probably would have signed him anyway but it was a happy coincidence for them.
