Being inspired by everything, believing everything can be a subject for a poem, I often find mine in a dream, waking thought, song, many external influences. I enjoy all forms, have no favorites, Nature and events from my past are often used. I do try to color outside the lines however, not fixating on a single structure, subject, theme. For me the joy and passion of poetry, is in the exploration.

Whenever I have an idea or a nice sentence in mind, I write it down in my notebook. Every so often, when I'm in the writing mood, I review that notebook for ideas and sentences that spark something inside me. When an idea or sentence sparks the fire, I use it! Or sometimes, the idea is so powerful I use it right away. For example, I looked outside the window last week and looked at the snow. All of a sudden, I felt a certain feeling, and saw the snow outside in a new light, and I knew I had the perfect idea for a poem. These sparks will come to you more easily the more you practice getting the spark and using it. Practice makes progress for everything!

Think about the topic and how you might want to make it sound.
List off words that relate to the topic and how they feel, sound, smell, taste, etc.
think of poetic techniques that would tie it all together- alliteration, rhyme, assonance, simile, metaphor, imagery, etc.
Finally, think of the type of language you can use to create an effect. Eg. Simplistic language is the point of view is from a child or complex language from a professor.
Also, try and focus on a main theme or key idea to portray.

first: experience something.
Take a walk, love a dog, lose a family member, eat something wonderful, kiss a frog . . . anything that causes an emotional response.
next repeat this and try on different emotions and take notes on how they feel.
finally: place your best and worst experiences on paper.
this is oversimplified of course but if it moves you it may move others when you write about it.

Poetry comes easily to me so idk about other people. I just write what I'm feeling. I think of my senses. Sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. I also do word vomits and that helps me too. Things of your experiences. Look up synonyms to simple words that could spice up your poem.
