Is a "deliverance" the same thing as an exorcism?

So I was talking about possession and exorcisms the other day with my family(it was a normal conversation, makes sense in context), and later that day my mom showed me a pamphlet for a church she is thinking about going to, and said they do deliverances there, and that we should go sometime. She was completely serious. So, is a deliverance the same thing as an exorcism? Because if it is, my mom basically implied that I m possessed. No religious wars please, I simply want to know if they are the same thing, thanks.

An exorcism - if they were real - would be considered a kind of deliverance. But exorcisms are not real. God incarcerated all the demons in hell during the first century AD. Both Peter and Jude attest to this fact in scripture.

I think that the difference is that exorcism deals with 'possession' (when a demon has some direct control over a person), whereas deliverance deals with 'obsession' (when a demon has latched onto a person and is causing them temptations or other troubles, but does not actually have any direct control over them). The link below is an article written on the subject by a priest.

NB. I am basing this on what I have read from Catholic sources, and it may be that other churches use the words with slightly different senses to these.

Sorry, never heard that word applied in that way before. Maybe you should call that church and ask them what a deliverance is? By the way, there's nothing normal about a conversation about exorcism unless you're discussing how utterly idiotic the idea is, and how gullible the believers in it are.

I thought Deliverance was a much better film.

Not possessed. Maybe just infested with demons. Deliverance is deliverance from SIN.
