Of course they can! Dreams can and do go back and forth in your Life and pick out anything they want to dream about. Dreams are not limited by this current time frame, nor this space here and now. How confining! Sometimes in Life we need to go back and revisit events that happened to us and feel the feelings, and the emotions involved, and once we do, then we see a clearer picture of what actually happened to us. Little kids don't understand their dreams until much later when they know more of the details of the events they dream about. And then the dream comes together and the person sees the whole picture, and understands what actually happened in her own time, in her own Life, both now.and then.

Based on our current understanding of things the answer is no. Perhaps one day we will discovered something about dreams and the brain that can transcend time

Your dreams cannot transcend time. Dreams are thoughts. They move forward in time with you. However, dreams can depict time travel.
