Question about elliptical trainers?

I just purchased an elliptical because I want to lose weight and I can't make it to a gym as often as I like. I was wondering just how many calories exercising on the elliptical burn. I usually calculate my activities on the calculator on Health Status, but I'm not sure if it's accurate and I read that machines at the gym aren't completely accurate either. I also know that there are a lot of factors like how long you've been on the machine, what pace and resistance are you using and distance as well as your body weight, age, and gender. Is Health Status' calculator accurate? How can I accurately tell how many calories I can burn?

There is no super accurate way to measure calories burned - but none of the machines are too far off.

What's a hundred calories among friends. If you are like most people and eat and burn 2000 calories a day, 100 calories is about 5%. Most of the measurement we use a day are about that accurate (stove, speedometer, thermostat).

Use your machine, and use the data it gives you. Then if you are not getting the desired results - adjust your workout or eating. Also remember that these are moving targets - you will be making adjustments anyway.

The best calorie calculators include a heart rate monitor and inputs for weight and sex and age.
