What exactly was said by Bernie Sanders about white people and poverty?

I ve recently seen a meme running around facebook that doesn t include a the quote Sanders "supposedly " said about white people not knowing what it s like to be poor.

As someone from arkansas (which is a very poor state) and a democrat, I would like to know exactly what Sanders said?

Did Sanders say "white people don t know what it s like to be poor."?

If he did say this, do you believe what he said is right?

"When you’re white you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor. You don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you walk down the street, or dragged out of a car." Sanders

Unfortunately a lot of white people know exactly what it's like and that Bernie was lying to get the black vote.

Exact quote (in response to a question about "what are your racial blind spots?"):

"When you are white, you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor, you don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you are walking down a street or dragged out of a car. We must be firm in making it clear that we will end institutional racism and reform a broken criminal justice system."

It wasn't very well phrased, for sure...there are certainly poor white people. Obviously.

But he's making a point that as a *group*, black people in America face more hardships than white people. He just didn't state it very clearly.

I don't know how to sugar coat this. He may have stated this poorly, but he stated it poorly in a very specific way, one that betrays a sense of what White Liberals think that Black people want to hear. If anything, it shows that he lives in kind of a white-person bubble in rural New England, surrounded by a state population that is > 90% white.

I was down to fifty cents with no job and no savings. I have picked food out of a trash can. I know what it's like to be poor. Perhaps Sanders is part of the Liberal Elite crowd.

He said if you're white, you don't know what it's like living in a ghetto or to be hassled walking down the street (along with a couple of other asinine remarks that I don't remember).

Except for the many homeless disabled who fall through the cracks in the system, most Americans don't know what it's like to be poor. Thank God.
