How does a person become a crane operator?

I'm part of international union of operating engineers. I work pipeline and we never really have cranes in that line of work. I have always dreamed of being a crane operator but I'm not sure what I need to do to learn about them. I know I can't just go from pipeline to being a crane operator that I may need to work as a oiler or rigger for a while which I totally understand.
