What makes a ring an engagement ring is the fact that it's presented as part of a proposal of marriage. You can wear any ring you like, but it won't be an engagement ring.

There isn't a law, at least in the U.S., the requires any marital status to wear a piece of jewelry. That noted, if a person purchases an engagement ring and wears that ring on their left ring finger without being engaged, they are a fraud. That same ring, worn on the right hand would be fine.

No.
You can wear a ring on your ring finger, but if you're not engaged it's just a ring - not an engagement ring.

That custom, when you want to wear an engagement ring but you are not engaged to be married, is to wear it on any finger other than the left ring finger. My sister, for instance, wears our mother's engagement ring on her right hand.
Of course, many people don't follow the custom, but if you choose to wear it on the left ring finger and the ring is obviously an engagement ring, people will ask questions or make incorrect assumptions.

Yes you can. Engagement rings are also referred to as promis rings and anivisary rings nowadays. My bf bought me an ring for our anivisary and some people have approached me and asked if I'm engaged, but I'm not. What makes a ring an engagnment ring is that fact he gave it to you in his marriage proposal.

No, you can't. Because a ring doesn't become an engagement ring until you are engaged.
If you're not engaged, it's clearly just a ring

My cousin got her grandmother engagement ring.
She wears it all the time on her right hand.
She does not wear it on the left hand, so, nobody can mistake her for being engaged.

You can wear it on your right hand. Only wear it on the left when and if you become engaged.

A ring is a ring, they all look the same, so how would anyone know it was for an engagement?
