Does it make sense for NATO to be North Atlantic?

NATO serves as a military alliance between much of the Western world. Now from my understanding, only north Atlantic countries are allowed to join NATO. It really doesn't make sense to me. What does geography have to do with anything. There are other developed countries that could join NATO not in the North Atlantic (Australia, Brazil, Israel, Japan, South Korea). I have limited knowledge on the topic so pardon me if I'm wrong in any sense.

    You are mistaken.

Not only North Atlantic nations are allowed to join NATO.

    Turkey is there.

Geography has a lot do to with it as NATO was originally designed to protect Western European nations from the Soviet Union and a few years later the Warsaw Pact.

ANd while those nations you described are not in NATO or the North Atlantic, they do have their own military pacts and alliances with the US (although I'm not sure about Brazil I don't think they do. someone correct me below if they do).

And , do they need to be a part of NATO?
