Why can t elevation contour lines merge or fork if both forks are the same elevation?

    Get matte board or cardboard, 1/4" thick or so, cut out the contours, and stack them. Marvel at this little mountain you have built. Play with the pieces until you understand what they are telling you.

    They can merge -- that is called a "sheer cliff" or a cut out. There are special situations where they can cross. That is an "overhang".
