Camping near Chicago?

I want to visit Chicago area this summer, but would like to save some money and camp instead of a hotel.

I am looking for a public park that is safe and a reasonable distance to the city.

Camping is not permitted in any park run by the Chicago Park District, but the Cook County Forest Preserves offer a limited number of campsites in the suburbs. See: http://fpdcc.com/camping/

Otherwise, there are no real campsites within 30 miles of the city.

It's been almost 20-years since I last went camping when I was a teenager but I think you need to pay permit or license to go camping in selected campgrounds. However, I don't think you can go camping in major parks in the city like Grant Park or Montrose Park. Visit Illinois Department of Natural Resources official web page for more info. If you have money but you don't want to spend a lot, you might want to consider checking out Hostels that are throughout the city. Look them up in Yelp! web page.

There is nowhere like that close to the city.
