Is there a heart rate monitor for exercise that notifies me when I reach the high or low end of a range?

I'm looking for a heart rate monitor I can wear during exercise such as running, one that I can program with a target range. It would produce an audible tone if I reach or exceed the top of the range, and a different tone at or below the bottom of the range. I might use it, for instance, to run until I hear the top tone, then drop to a walk until I hear the bottom tone.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. It could either be a standalone device or a combined monitor and smartphone app.

I don't know about other brands. but i have a Gamin 305 GPS HRM and it does that. You can program it without a computer but its much easier to do with a computer.

Actually it doesn't do exactly what you want. what you do is program an interval, like for 5 minutes where you run between 170bpm and 180 ppm. However it won't have a different tone for when you go below or below. it will just beep when you are too low or too high. Hopefully you can tell where you are - or you can look at the watch. and then adjust your pace accordingly.

I've used my 305 to do exactly what you describe. however its not as good as deal as you might expect. when you exceed you Target BPM, and start waking it keeps beeping for a while. it takes a while for your HR to drop below the target. and then when it hits the bottom, and you start running, again it keeps beeping for a while again.

I have found it just easier ( less noisy) to run timed intervals and just glance at the watch for BPM info and adjust my speed accordingly.

    * an interval can be for a set time or it can be open ended.
