What would I need to include in a training contract?

I am getting a horse to put miles on next month. I am worried this girl is going to flip on me. We agreed to $15 a day for five days a week, so $300 a month, plus $100 board at my friends board, and feed/hay costs.

This girl was also trying to get rid of a pig recently. She has been abusing the pig (misinformed about Mini Pigs) Here is what worried me. We have a friend willing to take the pig no matter what, but was more willing if it was spayed. When we mentioned, she stated she could not afford to spay the gilt. That caught me off guard. Especially the fact she is so willing to just let the horse come here and be here without coming out to see the place.

I'm not too worried about the girl abandoning the horse here. Its a nice mare, we could easily sell her if she did and find her a good home. I just want to have good legal standing and have my butt safe in the event she abandons the horse and thus we need to sell it, so we aren't sued. We are doing a contract here at the barn with alibies and even are having a friend who is a sheriff come out and witness the signing. But I would like to know what we should place in the contract? To keep her and us safe.

Hope this helps! You might have to change a lot in order to make it more suited for you, but this is a start! If the girl is under 18, have her parents sign it as well. Also, if she will be riding at any time during the training, and if you wanted to have her wear a helmet for safety reasons, you could also add this to the contract, where she will legally have to wear one while riding.

    Good luck!

The contract should contain the full amount of money being paid and when it is due.

Since you're worried about her leaving the horse, you may want to put something in it about failing to pay and/or pick up horse by a certain date gives you the right to sell the horse for the cost of training/board...or something along those lines.

There should also be something mentioned about what happens if the horse becomes sick or injured, who is responsible.

It would also be a good idea to take photos of the horse when it arrives, so she can't come back and say you did X to the horse, when it was like that when it arrived. (if you're sure she's a flake, weekly, or even daily photos wouldn't be a bad idea)
