What does infantryman's curiosity mean?

If I remember correctly, that's a reference to a journal of one of the soldiers that served under Napolean; it lead him to look at the awful aftermath of a battle, with bodies that were burned and torn apart, towns that had been burned, and other awful visions... Basically, it's like looking at a terrible traffic accident - you can't look away, but you wish you hadn't seen...
