Is "by" used as a preposition or an adverb in the following sentence? Stopping by and ant nest, I saw a spider.?

Thanks for your help.

Update:

It's a preposition. The whole phrase "by an ant nest" functions as an adverb.

"by" is being used as a preposition, with nest as the object of the preposition.
